James Maddox

Australian pianist James Maddox studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with Nikolai Evrov and in Italy with Alexander Lonquich und Edoardo Strabbioli. He performs chamber music, accompanies vocal recitals and appears as soloist across Europe, in Asia and Australia. He has wide experience as an orchestral pianist and has played regularly with the Beethoven Orchester Bonn, the Gürzenich Orchester Köln and the Bochumer Symphoniker. He has worked with composers such as Krysztof Penderecki, Jörg Widmann and Peter Eötvös and has given many premiéres.

Chamber music partners of recent years include the violinists Christian Altenburger, Mihaela Martin and Jose Blumenschein, violist Matthias Buchholz, cellists Christoph Richter and Maria Kliegel, clarinettists Patrick Messina and Jörg Widmann, the Mannheimer Streichquartett and the Alinde Quartett. Tours with violinist Vlad Stanculeasa have taken him to Switzerland, Romania and Sweden. A series of productions for the West German Radio with members of the WDR Symphony Orchestra focussed on late romantic chamber music. He has lieder recitals with mezzo-soprano Susanne Blattert and baritone Konrad Jarnot, and soprano Ingrid Schmithüsen joined him on his double CD of Anna Magdalena Bach’s Notebook on Coviello Classics. His recording of Brahms’ violin sonatas is a document of a 20-year collaboration with Ida Bieler encompassing much of the duo-sonata repertoire as well as trio, quartet and quintet literature.

James Maddox has been a regular guest at the Schleswig Holstein Festival, the Beethovenfest Bonn and the Klavier-Festival Ruhr.

James Maddox has taught at the Robert-Schumann-Hochschule in Düsseldorf since 1996. In 2008 he founded the Brahms-Tage in Bonn-Endenich, an annual chamber music festival of which he is artistic director.
